ANNOUNCING THE MOTU 160 CYCLE CHALLENGE
Motu is a multisport famed for its tough but beautiful cycling. For the first time, you can compete (individual or 2-person team) in the Motu 160, and do just the cycling.
Benefits? Stay dry (unless it rains)! Stay sitting on your bum the whole way (apart from stomping up those brutes of hills)!
Motu 160 riders will start with the multisporters and ride the same mountain bike stage. But at Motu township, you’ll hop onto a road bike, and ride back to Opotiki on the road. The road cycle features the roaring 7km descent of Traffords hill, and about 30km of gently lowering road – before the final dash into Opotiki. It is, naturally, 160km.
Prize money will be “winner take all.” So long as 70 or more riders enter, prizes are currently planned at $1500 for the first individual man, $1500 for the first individual woman, $750 for the first men’s team and $750 for the first women’s team.
PASS THE WORD AROUND! The Motu 160 is an idea that’s been waiting to happen for a long time.
BAYTRUST MOTU CHALLENGE IS COMING
Sure it’s cold and wet at the moment, but spring is on the way! That means Motu is in the air. Mark your calendar:
BayTrust Motu Challenge, 10 October 2009, Opotiki.
As always, this brilliant, friendly multisport race welcomes individuals and teams. It’s 172km, with an awesome mountain bike, run, road cycle, and grade 1/2 river kayak/cycle/run.
Last year, Richard and Elina Ussher won the individual categories. Around 500 people took part. This year should be the same. It’s a big day, and a fantastic achievement.
Across all the Motu participants, there’s again $50,000 in merit and spot prizes to be dished out.
MINI MOTU
Got kids and supporters? While you’re racing, they can stay entertained by taking part in the Mini Motu, near the finish in Opotiki. It’s a short, fun duathlon and last year over 150 kids gave it their all.

You’ll find all the information, including stage descriptions and profiles, on the Motu Challenge web site. There’s also an entry form. Check it out, get a group together and see you in October!
